The Mercedes-Benz W111 was produced between 1959 and 1971 in Saloons, Coupes and Cabriolets.
This Mercedes-Benz 220SEb Cabriolet was restored by us in 1997. Finished in the striking colour combination of 332 Dark Blue with Cream leather this vehicle has gone on to win various Concours competitions across the UK.
This 1966 220SEb Cabriolet was removed from 12 year storage in London and brought to us for re-commissioning before undergoing restoration from August 1996 to May 1997.
During the 10 month restoration period the vehicle was stripped down mechanically and assessed for repairs.
Engine, auto gearbox, front and rear axles were dismantled and re-conditioned. Full braking and steering systems were replaced, the fuel injection system was serviced and re-calibrated.
The vehicle was re-trimmed in Cream Leather with new carpet set and soft top fitted, the wood trim was restored in Germany.
Our assessment of the bodywork showed various corrosion in certain panels and a general age related flatness to the paintwork, our bodywork team uncovered further corrosion which was masked by previous heavy under sealing and waxoyl treatments.
As you see in certain photos the extent of corrosion was excessive requiring new panels. The whole vehicle was painted in the original 332 Dark Blue in a solvent base coat and clear lacquer 2 pack.
As the restoration continued the preservation of areas such as the floor pans, under chassis and wheel houses were all seam sealed, primed and treated with a heavy definition stone chip before painting to body colour.
In the Summer of 1997 shortly after the restoration was completed the vehicle went on the German Ponton Rally in St. Wendel performing faultlessly.
It has won Concours d’elegance competitions in 1998,1999, 2000, 2002 and in 2012 it won UK and International Concours.
It has featured in various magazines and can be seen in ‘Original Mercedes-Benz Coupe,Cabriolet and V8 Sedans’ authored by Tim Slade.
