A 1955 300SL Gullwing was delivered to the garage after being in a museum for 15 years without running. Our job brief was to re-commission the vehicle ready for use. Firstly the old fuel was drained, and the fuel tank was inspected and cleaned together with the fuel pumps, lines and a new set of fuel filters. After various checks on the engine, the spark plugs were removed and the engine was cranked until full oil pressure was obtained.
When running the engine it was apparent that there was a problem on the fuelling side of the engine. The injection pump lift pump was not producing enough fuel pressure and fuel delivery to each cylinder was very uneven. After informing the owner the fuel injection pump and injectors were removed and sent to Germany to one of the few companies in the world that can overhaul these pumps correctly. The pump and injectors were returned 5 weeks later with updated modifications carried out and totally overhauled.
